Symptom
- Failed to export a report to PDF.
- Error: 'Failed to export the report.'
- In Crystal Reports, when exporting a report to PDF format, it generates the error: 'Failed to export the report.'

- SAP Crystal Reports 2020
Reproducing the Issue
- In Crystal Reports, open a report.
- Export the report to PDF format.
It then generates the error: 'Failed to export the report.'
Cause
- This rare scenario occurs when an object on the report is corrupted, and causes the export to PDF to fails.
Resolution
- Remove the corrupted object(s) from the report design.
- In Crystal Reports, to identify which object on the report that is causing the issue:
- Open the report in Crystal Reports.
- Save the report locally under a different name for backup purposes.
- Remove one section at a time, to help identify in which section the corrupted object is located.
- 3.1 Under the menu "Report", select "Section Expert"
- 3.2 In the "Section Expert" window, select a section, and click "Insert"
- 3.3 This will add a new section below.
( For example: it will add the Report Header b )
- 3.4 Select the top section, and click "Delete"
( For example: select the Report Header a, and click "Delete" )
- 3.5 Click "OK"
This will remove all the content for that specific section.
- Export the report to PDF format.
- If it still generates the error when exporting, then repeat step 3 and 4, until you find the section that contains a corrupted object.
- When the report export to PDF format successfully, you have now identify which section contains the corrupted. Then, take the original copy of the report, and save it again under a different name for backup purposes.
- Start removing database fields, pictures, objects from the section that contain a corrupted object.
- Export the report to PDF format.
- If it still generates the error when exporting, then repeat step 7 and 8, until you find the object in the section that contains a corrupted object.
- Once you identified which object caused the issue, open the original report, remove the object(s), and re-add the object if needed.
You will then be able to successfully export the report to PDF format.
Note: In most cases, the corrupted object is a image.
