2766380 - ASE server is running fine, but errorlog shows thousands of major faults errors - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Major faults increasing - performance is fine, at least for a while.
    Adaptive Server had 2954 major and 0 minor page faults since boot, and 1751 major and 0 minor page faults in last 30000 milliseconds.
    Adaptive Server had 11628 major and 0 minor page faults since boot, and 8674 major and 0 minor page faults in last 30000 milliseconds.

  • Looking at the devices in the bootup sequence:
    Virtual device 172 started using asynchronous i/o.
    Activating disk 'mydev92' of size 2097152 KB.
    Warning: Sybase recommends not to use '/dev/data92' as a database device, because it is a block device and may cause data loss in case of system failure.
    Initializing virtual device 137, '/dev/data92' with dsync 'off'.
     
  • Milliseconds after the serve boot completed, the error mesages start starts printing the major error messages - and never stops:
    00:31:46.29 Master device size: 100 megabytes, or 51200 virtual pages. (A virtual page is 2048 bytes.)
    00:31:46.29 Warning: Cannot set console to nonblocking mode, switching to blocking mode. 
    00:31:46.29 Console logging is disabled. This is controlled via the 'enable console logging' configuration parameter.         
    00:31:46.32 Adaptive Server had 42404 major and 0 minor page faults since boot, and 42404 major and 0 minor page faults in last 30000 milliseconds.
