2800772 - Unable to increase database size due to Error 840

Symptom

When trying to increase <SID> database, raised Error 840.

use master
go

alter database <SID> on SID_data_001 = "xxxM"
go

Msg 840, Level 17, State 2: Server 'SID', Line 1: Device 'SID_log_xxx' (with physical name '/sybase/SID/SID_log_xxx', and virtual device number 14) has not been correctly activated at startup time. Please contact a user with System Administrator (SA) role.

<Error message at startup>
