Symptom

  • How to dump a database to NULL device on Unix ?

  • A dump database to '/dev/null' fails with 'Invalid Device' message:

    dump database model to "/dev/null"
    go


    Backup Server: 4.134.2.1: Invalid Device: you cannot dump to or load from the null device, '/dev/null'.

  • A dump database to '/dev/null' with multiple stripes fails with error 3250

    dump database model to "/dev/null"
    stripe on "/dev/null"

    go

    Msg 3250, Level 16, State 1:
    The devices '/dev/null' and '/dev/null' specified in the command should be different.
