2815631 - Failed to copy files during KX_SWITCH upgrade phase

Symptom

When executing an upgrade with Software Update Manager (SUM), the tool stops in phase MAIN_SWITCH/SUBMOD_SWITCH_KERNEL/KX_SWITCH:

Severe error(s) occurred in phase MAIN_SWITCH/SUBMOD_SWITCH_KERNEL/KX_SWITCH!
Last error code set: Failed to copy X files, check 'KX_SWITCH.LOG' for details 

In log file KX_SWITCH.LOG, messages similar to the ones below can be found:

3 ETQ399 Copying file 'sapuxuserchk'.
3EETQ399 Cannot write to '/usr/sap/<sid>/SYS/exe/uc/linuxx86_64/sapuxuserchk': Permission denied
...
1EETQ399 Last error code set is: Failed to copy X files, check 'KX_SWITCH.LOG' for details
1EETQ204 Upgrade phase "KX_SWITCH" aborted with severe errors ("<timestamp>")
