2821023 - How is shared memory allocated when increased on a running ASE server - SAP ASE

Symptom

How will ASE behave under the following circumstances:

  1. Log into a Unix box with a project with memory set at 6 GB.
    sp_configure 'max memory', 0, '6G'
  2. Create a Sybase server with max memory of 6 GB and allocated all that 6 GB to the server.
  3. Start ASE with that configuration.
  4. Now connect to Sybase and increase max memory to 8 GB.
  5. Shut down and Restart ASE.
    Questions:
    • Does the instance come up with 8 GB even though project is set to 6 GB?
    • If so, does ipcs show two shared memory segments?
    • If the OS does not allocate the extra 2 GB memory to ASE; does it matter to the startup process?
    • Will the startup process not care how the max memory is set?
