Symptom

The Group Total value is not the sum of all values in a column.

**Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental**

Environment

  • SAP SuccessFactors Compensation
  • SAP SuccessFactors Variable pay

Cause

Group total values is alwas the sum of the oginal value each cell in the column

Resolution

Group Total value is always the sum of the original value of each cell in a column. Also, the value will be based on the form and not the filter. So even if you filter to one employee, the group total will show the sum of the entire population in the form. Please note that this is not available for some standard fields.

Please always note that the values you see on each user’s cell for a specific field might be considering other fields and/or configuration. Let us take standard Merit ($ and %) field as an example.

  1. The Merit $ (amount) Group Total here is just the sum of the 2 values present. This is because there are no other fields that needs to be considered in the merit increase calculation.
    img1.png
    Merit % (2%) of the Current Salary ($165,600) is Merit $ ($3,312)
    Merit % (2%) of the Current Salary ($112,920) is Merit $ ($3,387.60)
    Merit $ Group Total = ($3,312+$3,387.60) = $6,699.60
    Merit % Group Total = Merit $ Group Total ($6,699.60) / Current Salary Group Total ($594,720.00) = 0.01126 * 100 = 1.126 rounded to 1.13%
  2. Unlike our example above, the Merit $ (amount) Group Total here is NOT the sum of the 3 values present in the Merit $ (amount) fields. This is because the value for each Merit $ (amount) field’s cell is considering the Units per Year.
    img2.png
    Merit % (2%) of the Current Salary ($127,800.00) is $2,556 then Units per Year is applied. That would be $2,556 / 24 = $106.50. Same goes for the others.      Merit % (3%) of the Current Salary ($149,400.00) = $4,482 / 24 = $186.75
    Merit % (1%) of the Current Salary ($39,000.00) is $390 / 24 = $16.25

When you sum up the merit increase amount per user, the result does not match what’s on the Merit $ Group Total. This is because Merit $ Group Total does not consider the Units per Year. It will only sum up the original values. In this example, Merit $ Group Total is $2,556.00 + $4,482.00 + $390.00 = $7,428.00

      Merit % Group Total is calculated as Merit $ Group Total ($7,428.00) / Current Salary Group Total ($594,720.00) = 0.01248 * 100 = 1.248 rounded to 1.25%

There are other configurations that affects merit increase – if in case you are experiencing this issue please make sure that you first calculate the merit increase out of the current annual salary before summing it up, do not just take each merit amount value to sum up.

You can do straight summation of Group Total result provided that you are sure and/or already checked that there's no other field/configuration that affects the field's cell result.
