2829412 - Database recovery taking too long - after an abnormal exit of the ASE Server - SAP ASE

Symptom

A server went down abnormally for example:

  • shutdown with nowait
  • kill spid from the OS
  • ASE shutdown unexpectedly

When the server is restarted, it is taking a extraordinary amount of time to recover.  The dbcc showrecovery shows a large number of transactions to be recovered.  For example:

dbcc showrecovery (mydb) -- only a small portion of the report shown below

Recovery Log Markers:
        Checkpoint Log Record: (530902636, 2)
        First Log Record: (96176743, 12)
        Last Log Record: (530902672, 1)

PFTS Information:
        PFTS Table: 0x0000010081194800
        Number of PFTS entries: 22402675
        Number of buckets: 1013
        Average entries per bucket: 22115

Current Statistics:
        Log records scanned: 37279476
        Current log record: (98075063, 0), type: PFTS  -- PFTS = PageFlush Time Stamp
        Current transaction id: (98075063, 0)

How can recovery be sped up?
