2866794 - DISK INIT failed with error 5123 - SAP ASE CE

Symptom

  • This problem is specific to ASE Cluster Edition (CE).
  • Attempt to create a disk device for a "Single Instance Database".
  • When executing the command DISK INIT it fails with the following error:

Msg 5123, Level 16, State 3:
Server 'NAME_OF_ASE_SERVER', Line 1:
DISK INIT encountered an error while attempting to open/create the physical file for device '/Device_Path/Device_Name'. Consult the Adaptive Server error log for more details. For the Cluster Edition, check the error log of each instance.

  • The following error messages are also printed in the errorlog:

kernel iof_init_fdevice: Error(-2) while mapping virtual device(24) to a fence device
kernel udactivate: virtual device 24 doesn't have fencing capabilities
kernel Initializing virtual device 24, '/Device_Path/Device_Name' with dsync 'off'.
kernel Virtual device 24 started using asynchronous (with DIRECTIO) i/o.
kernel Deactivating virtual device 24, '/Device_Path/Device_Name'.
