2874926 - ABEND BRAIN (635) Total number of structure element combinations exceeds allowed limit

Symptom

You are executing a query on Analysis for Office and during the first run pops up the following error message:

| Termination message sent ABEND BRAIN (635): Query <TechnicalName> could not be opened
| MSGV1: <TechnicalName>
| Total number of structure element combinations exceeds allowed limit
| Query <TechnicalName> could not be opened.
| Program error in class SAPMSSY1 method : UNCAUGHT_EXCEPTION

This error message can also be reproduced in RSRT transaction of the BW system.

Reproducing the Issue

Open Analysis for Office and execute the query.

Cause

This is not an issue or a query definition limitation. This is a system limitation.

Resolution

SAP note below explains in detail the situation described:

1980004 - Extending the structure member limit

"For queries with two structures, the rule is that if one structure has more than 1,000 structure members, the combination (the Cartesian product) of both structures can contain a maximum of 50,000 structure members."

On those cases, SAP recommend to redesign the query executed.
According to the note, it is recommended that you simplify the design of these queries or split the queries into multiple queries.
