2876046 - Device has physically been deleted from a running server - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • On a running ASE server
    • database device(s) have been deleted at OS level or
    • device(s) have been removed or encrypted in a ransomware attack

  • When taking a backup, the backup fails with Backup Server error:

 Backup Server: 4.30.2.3: Volume validation error: attempt to open /dev/sybase/data_device_123.dat returned No such file or directory.

  • When restarting startup, ASE errorlog may report error 840:

Msg 840 Device 'data_device_123' (with physical name '<file path and name>', and virtual device number <device number>)
has not been correctly activated at startup time. Please contact a user with System Administrator (SA) role.
