Symptom

  • SAP ASE installation using setup.bin fails to create the master device on a raw device instead of a file system file:
  • The following error is reported by setup.bin:

Do you want to create sample databases?: 1
Master Device (Default: /<path_to_installation_dir>/data/master.dat): /dev/vgsybdbASE16/MASTER
Can not create device because parent directory
'/dev/vgsybdbASE16' does not exist or it is not writable.
PRESS <ENTER> TO CONTINUE:

  • The /dev/vgsybdbASE16 raw device exists.
  • SAP ASE installation is run by the 'sybase' user.
