Symptom
- How is it possible to restrict permissions for Managers to only nominate their direct reports?
- Additionally, how can managers nominate and their managers nominate a managers direct reports? Is this possible?
- How can programs be restricted to a certain target population?

Environment
SAP SuccessFactors Reward and Recognition
Resolution
This can be achieved through role-based permissions and restricting target populations.
Role-Based Permissions
Please review Implementing and Managing Reward and Recognition - Enabling Permissions for Managers.
Note: Managers should not have any other assigned roles in the system which contain either of the two miscellaneous permissions. This will result in inconsistent behaviour as managers will be allowed to nominate users outside of their direct reports.
Restricting target populations to specific programs
Non-Employee Central
Please review Implementing and Managing Reward and Recognition - Enabling Permissions to Assign a Spot Award for Various Program Types for multiple configuration examples.
NOTE: Reward and Recognition only supports 1 role with 1 target population for 1 program for non-Employee Central environments. Using multiple roles to restrict programs will cause the system to combine roles which may result in users nominating employees for programs they should not have access to. This is currently expected behavior, and there is no workaround.
Employee Central Only
Customers with Employee Central can use business rules to restrict target populations to specific programs:
Go to Configure Business Rules and create a new Basic Rule.
For this rule, we're saying only managers and managers managers in a hierarchy can nominate a managers direct reports for a program.
Should you not meet this criteria, the warning message set within the Else statement will be populated upon saving the award.
If you only want to have a Manager to nominate their direct reports only, then you only need to have the first Else If statement from the screen shot below rather than two.
Once saved go to Configure Object Definitions and select the spotAward object
Navigate to the validation rule section and add your new rule.
