Symptom
When editing a legacy position in Succession Org Chart, the fields configured for the section "User Details" are not editable for positions with an incumbent, even though users have read/write permission over the user elements. The fields are, however, editable on vacant positions (TBH).
Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.
Environment

- SAP SuccessFactors Legacy Position Nomination Method
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to Succession Org Chart;
- Open the Talent Card of a position with active incumbent;
- Click "Edit Position" on the card menu;
- The fields under "User Details" are not editable (greyed out):
- Open the Talent Card of a vacant position (TBH);
- Click "Edit Position" on the card menu;
- The fields under "User Details" are editable:
Cause
When editing a position with incumbent, the User Details fields will not be editable. This is the expected system behavior, as user attributes must be edited on Employee Profile or through Employee Import. For vacant positions, it is possible to edit any user details because the "Edit Position" dialog is the only way within the application to edit this information, besides the Position Import tool.
Resolution
The only exception to this rule is the "Job Title" field. If configured to show in the section "User Details", it will be editable if the user has field edit permissions from "Employee Data" or "Change User" permission from "Manage User" section in Role-Based Permissions.
Therefore, when a position has an incumbent, it is necessary to update the user attributes directly in the users' Profile page, or via import. For vacant positions (TBH), the attributes can be edited in the "Edit Position" dialog in Succession Org Chart.
The user attributes (standard elements) displaying under "User Details" in Edit Position dialog are configured in the XML code of your instance, by defining the field element under the view-template section "positionOrgChart".
