Symptom
When you convert a Lead to Opportunity, the error "Sales area not valid based on organizational structure" occurs upon saving.
Environment
SAP Cloud for Customer
Reproducing the Issue
- Go to Sales work center.
- Go to Leads work center view.
- Open the Lead ABC (ABC represents the lead ID) and click on Actions > Convert to Opportunity.
- In the Quick Creation page, fill in the mandatory detials and click on Save.
- Upon saving, the error occurs.
Cause
In this system, the business configuration scoping question "Do you want to keep your Lead’s Sales Area Data (Sales Org, Distribution Channel, Division etc ) when converting a Lead to a Customer?" (under Sales >> Lead Management >> Leads) is scoped.
The Lead ABC is a Lead created without an existing customer.
This means that during Lead conversion, a customer is created with Sales Data and the sales organization, distribution channel and division from the Lead is copied to the customer sales data.
The checks for the sales organization/distribution channel/division in the customer Sales Data is more strict than the check in the Lead. (For an Account, when you maintaining the combination in Sales Data, Sales Organizaiton and Distribution Channel is mandotory, it's not allowed that only Sales Org is maintained but with empty Distribution Channel.)
So the reason why the error occurs is because you did not maintained complete Sales Data in the Lead.
Please, aside from all that is shared above, mind that for leads there is a hard coded check on distribution channel, always.
Resolution
Pease correct the sales area data for the lead AAA (to be "compliant" with the customer sales data check), or switch off the mentioned Business Configuration scope.
