2914156 - Error: 'This document could not be opened.' when trying to open a report in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Unable to open a report.
  • Cannot open a .rpt file in Crystal Reports.
  • When attempting to open a report in Crystal Reports, it fails with the error:
       
     "< File Name.rpt >  This document could not be opened."

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Double-click on a report file with the extension: .rpt 
  2. Crystal Reports starts, and the following error message pops-up:

  "< File Name.rpt >  This document could not be opened."

Cause

  • When saving a report in Crystal Reports, it create a file with a .rpt extension. 
  • When installing Crystal Reports on a computer, it add the file association to open .rpt file in Crystal Reports.
  • The error occurs when trying to open a file with a .rpt extension that was not created in Crystal Reports.

Resolution

  • Since the file is not a report file created in Crystal Reports, try to find what application the file was created in, and open the file in the appropriate application.
    For example, rename the .rpt file to .txt,  and open the file in Notepad. Most of the time, the first text lines indicates what extension or application the file was designed with.
