2915794 - Error 14127 when attempting to change default charset/sortorder - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • On an attempt to change ASE's default character set and sort order:

Attempting to change default sortorder ID from 50 to 22
Attempting to change default character set ID from 1 to 4

  • ASE is booted in single-user mode:

ASE booted single user mode - updates allowed to system catalogs

  • It reports the following errors when rebuilding an index on the table sysattributes:

Checking table 'sysattributes' (object ID 21): Logical page size is 2048 bytes.
Checking partition 'sysattributes_21' (partition ID 21) of table 'sysattributes'. The logical page size of this table is 2048 bytes.
Rebuilding indexes for master..sysattributes.
Error: 14127, Severity: 16, State: 2
Cannot drop or modify partition descriptor database 'master' (1), object 'sysattributes' (21), index 'sysattributes' (0), partition 'sysattributes_21' (21) as it is in use. Please retry your command later. Total reference count '8'. Task reference count '2'.
Error: 3436, Severity: 20, State: 2
Cannot rebuild index 3 for the 'sysattributes' table in the 'master' database.
Error: 3434, Severity: 20, State: 1
Cannot change sortorder. Server shutting down. Restart to continue with sortorder unchanged.

  • ASE is shutdown.
