Symptom
- On SAP ASE 16.0 SP03 PL05, PL08 and PL08 HF1, database backups and connections to the ASE Backup Server via SITE HANDLER fail due to timeslice errors.
- These are examples of timeslice errors in the ASE errorlog:
- timeslice -501, current process infected at 0x2179091 (pausenonatomic+0x3)
timeslice error: spid <n> exhausted its 'time slice' of 100 milliseconds and additional 'cpu grace time' of 1000 ticks (100000 milliseconds). It has been marked for termination. - timeslice -1001, current process infected at 0xcb499d (lc_findconn+0xe0)
timeslice error: spid <n> exhausted its 'time slice' of 100 milliseconds and additional 'cpu grace time' of 1000 ticks (100000 milliseconds). It has been marked for termination.
- SQL causing error:
- SYB_BACKUP...sp_who
- DUMP DATABASE
- DUMP TRANSACTION
- These timeslice errors are accompanied by stack traces with the following sets of functions:
- sb_getsite
lc__fill
lc_newconn
openremote
estremote
execrproc
setprocenv
execproc
s_execute
- lc_findconn
readremote
rpcdata
dpdb_poll_async_bs_rpc
dpdb_main
s_execute
Note: Complete stack traces are available under Attachments.
-
ASE errorlog also reports spinlock messages:
Spinlock SITEBUF_SPIN at address 0x0000000146dcfa00 is an orphan locked spinlock. llock : 1 lowner : 0. Task 51839372 was the lastowner of this lock and timeslice of this task will be reset to release the orphan locked spinlock properly
- Following a spate of above timeslice errors, the ASE server becomes inaccessible. It needs to be shut down and restarted.
