2951045 - Error 952 "Database ... cannot be opened because the system index descriptor for table ID 4 cannot be installed" during db recovery after downgrade from 16.0 SP03 - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • After downgrading an SAP ASE 16.0 SP03 server using sp_downgrade_esd and shutting it down with the 'shutdown with nowait' command,
  • The model database recovery hits Error 952 on the ASE reboot using a lower level binary:

Error: 952, Severity: 20, State: 9
Database 'model' cannot be opened because the system index descriptor for table ID 4 cannot be installed.
Unable to proceed with the recovery of dbid <3> because of previous errors.
Continuing recovery with the next database.
The logical pagesize of the server is 4 Kb.
