2973423 - Error "Can’t bill item category &2 in SD docs of type &1 using billing type &3" in SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

Symptom

Create a billing document related to a sales order. At the time of invoice creation, the error message appears: "Cannot bill item category &2 in SD documents of type &1 using billing type &3".

Cause

Creating the billing document involves checking whether the copying control entries for item categories are available for the sales order type. Missing item categories in the copying control settings result in the error for the affected item.

For example, in an order-related scenario: A sales document type "OR" with item category "TAX" (Billing Relevance "A" - Delivery-related billing document) and billing document type "F2" raises the following error: "Can't bill item category TAX in SD docs of type TA using billing type F2".

The reason for this error is the relevance of item category "TAX" for delivery-related billing, leading to the absence of copying control between the Sales Document and Billing Document for the specified combination.

Resolution

Considering the example mentioned above: As item category TAX is a delivery related billing item, the billing creation should take reference to delivery document instead of sales order document.
