2978380 - ODBC DSN Name missing when creating a report in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • ODBC DSN missing.
  • When creating a new report using an ODBC connection in Crystal Reports, the ODBC DSN is not listed.
  • Why the ODBC DSN created in Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator, does not show up in Crystal Reports?

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator, create an ODBC DSN to a data source.
  2. In Crystal Reports, create a new report.
  3. Select ODBC connection, and notice the ODBC DSN created in the Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator is not listed in Crystal Reports.

Cause

  • Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator have a 32bit and 64bit version.

  • Crystal Reports is a 32bit or 64bit application, depending on the version:
    • Crystal Reports 2013, 2016 are 32bit applications.
    • Crystal Reports 2020 is a 64bit application.

  • The ODBC DSN created cannot be seen in Crystal Reports because it was created in the incorrect version of Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator:

    • For Crystal Reports 2013, 2016:
The ODBC DSN was created in the 64bit version of the ODBC Data Source Administrator, and since Crystal Reports 2013, 2016 are 32bit application, it cannot see the 64bit ODBC DSN.

    • For Crystal Reports 2020:
The ODBC DSN was created in the 32bit version of the ODBC Data Source Administrator, and since Crystal Reports 2020 is a 64bit application, it cannot see the 32bit ODBC DSN.

Resolution

  • Create an ODBC DSN in the 32bit or 64bit version of Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator, depending on the version of Crystal Reports used:

    • For Crystal Reports 2013, 2016:
      • Create the ODBC DSN in the 32bit Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator.

    • For Crystal Reports 2020:
      • Create the ODBC DSN in the 64bit Microsoft ODBC Data Source Administrator.
