2984073 - Select target search depth - Advanced Reporting

Symptom

Select Target Search Depth is an enhancement of the search bar in Advanced Reporting that improves the performance while searching for specific columns.

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors HXM Suite

Resolution

  1. Go to Advanced Reporting
  2. Type the column name in the search box
  3. Select the target search depth level
  4. Hit Enter
  5. The result will be displayed according to the depth level selected (If it's the first time you do that and there is no cache yet, the result might take some time to complete)

  6. Click on the column name you need

  7. Wait few seconds and the respective column will be located

  8. Now you can drag and drop the column to the query

Understanding Depth Level

Depth level can be illustrated as in the screenshot above. We don't consider the Driving Table (the very first table available after selecting the category e.g. Workflow > Workflow Wf Request Step) as a depth level, so it will always be displayed in the result of the search.

The default value is set to 1 e.g. if you search for "First name" and the depth level is specified as 1, then the search would happen up to the first level components. If the depth is set to level 2 or 3, the search is limited up to the specified component levels (e.g. if 3 is set, then the search will display results for 1,2 and 3).

When the user specifies depth level as 1, the search results are cached only for level one components. Now if the user increases the depth level gradually to 2 or 3, the system would run a search only on 2 and 3 level components. The first level search is already retained and hence the new search would only include the incremental results.

A gradual increase in the levels would have a higher probability of yielding results than specifying a higher depth level initially which might take longer than expected.

Note: The levels can be increased up to 10 using the incremental arrows in the field. However, since this is a text field and would also support typing another value, the search results would not be guaranteed if the initial search is within a higher depth level.

Also, we recommend to use the search without any object/table selected in the query. This will make sure that all columns available in the system will be searched.
