2986121 - Trend chart draws a line over missing data points for some cases and for others not in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) & SAP Digital Boardroom

Symptom

The following behavior occurs in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):

  • Trend chart draws a line over missing data points for some cases and for others not

Environment

  • SAP Analytics Cloud (Enterprise)

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create an XLSX Document with the values:
    DATE VALUE
    1/1/2020 50
    2/1/2020 100
    3/1/2020 70
    4/1/2020 80
    8/1/2020 40
    9/1/2020
    10/1/2020
    11/1/2020 60
    12/1/2020 85
  2. Use the above created XLSX Document as Data Source for a Story

  3. Insert a Trend Chart, the values from April to August are connected by a line, whereas between August and November there is no connecting line

Cause

The behavior is correct:

  • When there are no values between two keypoints, the line is drawn
  • When the values are NULL, the line is not drawn

In this example there are two gaps, one is from 1/5/2020 to 1/7/2020 which are missing. In this case the chart will render the trend with a line.

The second gap is for the months of September and October, which have records but with null values. This time the chart will not render the line to fill the gap, because the values are null.

As soon as you enter 0 in the null cells, you will see that the line will be drawn.

Please note, if you create a similar chart in Microsoft Excel or other tool, the behavior is the same

Resolution

If the business need requires a line to be drawn or to be suspended, the data must be prepared bearing in mind the concepts that:

  • When there are no values between two keypoints, the line is drawn
  • When the values are NULL, the line is not drawn
