2992710 - Unable to decrease the length of a published custom field - SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition

• The published custom field cannot be saved after the length has been decreased.
• Pop-up error is seen on saving with the following messages:
• Field cannot be saved. Correct invalid entries first.
• Field length must not be decreased.

This is the expected behavior.

• The custom field length cannot be decreased once it is published in app Custom Field.
• As stated in the SAP Help Portal documentation "When you publish a field with a certain length, you cannot decrease the field length later on."
• You may be able to remove the field from all usage and then delete it in order to create a different field with an increased length for the same purpose to replace it.

If this is a feature which is really needed, it's recommended to participate in the SAP Customer Influence initiative. There, it's possilbe to submit improvement requests, explore existing ones, and vote on them. SAP will consider the most voted suggestions to be implemented in future releases.
