2995006 - Error: 'Invalid group path: null - [JRC00005393] when drilling-down on a report in Crystal Reports Viewer or in Crystal Reports for Enterprise

Symptom

  • Crystal Reports Viewer crash.
  • Crystal Reports for Enterprise crash.
  • When drilling-down on a report, the application crash.
  • Abe to drill-down on other reports, the error only occur on a specific report.
  • When drilling-down on a specific report, Crystal Reports Viewer, and Crystal Reports for Enterprise close with the error:
       
       "Crystal Reports has encountered an unexpected error and needs to close.

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In Crystal Reports Viewer, or Crystal Reports for Enteprise, open a report that contains drill-down.
  2. Click on a group to drill-down for more details.
        
    The application then crash with the error: JRC00005393

Cause

  • A box object on the report cause the drill-down to fail.  
         
  • In more details: A box is an object that can go across multiple sections on a report. If a box crossed the group on which the user drilled-down, and it end in a different section, it causes the application to crash. This is a known issue tracked under SAP Note 2996689

Resolution

  • Resize the box object to be in one section only, or delete the box object.
         
    1. In Crystal Reports, or Crystal Reports for Enterprise, open the report.
       
    2. In the design or structure view of the report, locate a box object that goes accross multiple sections.
         
    3. Resize the box object to only display in one section, or delete the box objects. 
            
    4. Save the report.
