3000834 - Story Fails with "GDPR Context Field Missing" Error Due to Missing Context Fields for Sensitive Data

Symptom

  • When previewing or running a Story query, users may encounter one or both of the following error messages:
    • "GDPR context field missing... "
  • Read Audit is enabled in the instance and there are Sensitive Fields configured in the instance
  • When adding Sensitive fields to Chart and Table definition in Story designer, the following error is shown:
    • "Unable to retrieve data from data source. Error: [ Query is not allowed since data for sensitive column [column] cannot be returned without logging ]"

Image/data in this KBA is from SAP internal systems, sample data, or demo systems. Any resemblance to real data is purely coincidental.

Environment

SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Create a new Story query
  2. Select fields that are likely marked as Sensitive like e.g. National ID, Gender, Ethnicity
  3. Preview the query
  4. The following message is shown and  "GDPR context field missing... "

Then after saving the query and building charts in designer:

  1. Add a Chart or Table component
  2. Select Measure Count and for Dimension select the Sensitive Field, e,g. Ethnicity
  3. Chart will load and eventually show an error: "Unable to retrieve data from datasource.  Error: [ Query is not allowed since data for sensitive column [column] cannot be returned without logging ]"

Cause

When using Sensitive Fields, the system requires Context Fields (such as Person ID or Candidate ID) to be included in the query for Read Audit logging. Without these, the query is blocked to comply with GDPR and data privacy regulations.

Resolution

When selecting Sensitive fields, select Context fields as well. The required context field is indicated in the error message.

In Story Designer, you will also have to select Sensitive Field plus the Context Field in the Chart/Table component definition.  e.g. In Dimension, select both Ethnicity and Candidate ID.

Taking the example above, select Person ID:

Upon selecting the context field, you will notice the following info message stating that "This field indicated as Sensitive according to Data Privacy configuration."

As for Story Designer:

Filters can't be applied on GDPR sensitive fields in Story designer page, as a workaround in data source add this field in Calculated column and in Story designer apply filter on this calculated column
