3001300 - How to: Analyze HANA Issues Using Graphical Thread Sample Results

Symptom

HANA thread samples are regular samples of thread activities which are historicized. The thread samples can be retrieved using following system views:

  • M_SERVICE_THREAD_SAMPLES
  • _SYS_STATISTICS.HOST_SERVICE_THREAD_SAMPLES

Besides, the thread samples can be retrieved using following scripts included in SAP Note 1969700:

  • HANA_Threads_ThreadSamples_FilterAndAggregation
  • HANA_Threads_ThreadSamples_AggregationPerTimeSlice

Those scripts and monitors view will retrieve the result in a table.

Using tabular thread samples to analyze issues, such as performance degradation, high CPU utilization and locking situation, can be powerful and useful in most cases; However, the results from tabular thread samples can be either difficult to read, due to huge amount of data collection, or become too microcosmic if the analysis was needed across a large time frame. In these cases, graphical thread sample results can help to either show the aggregated results in simplified way, or give an overall picture on what has happened in the analyzed system. Simply say, analyzing some kind of issue scenarios can gain more benefits from the graphical thread sample results, which cannot be easily analyzed by tabular results.
