3010629 - Overhead Distribution - Distribution Amount After Rounding is Not the Expected Amount

Symptom

You execute overhead distribution run and  find the distribution amount after rouunding is not the expected amount.

For example, there is a total amount of 232,558 TWD to be distributed 60/40 to 2 cost centers. After calculating the 60%, it is supposed to be 139,535 TWD (after rounding). But the system shows that the distribution amount is 139,534 TWD.

Environment

SAP Business ByDesign

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to Cost and Revenue work center.
  2. Go to Overhead Distribution view.
  3. Open the ovearhead distribution run in question.
  4. View Porcessed Successfully tab.
  5. In the row of percentage 60%, distribution amount is 139,534 TWD.

Cause

There is a total amount of 232,558 to be distributed 60/40 to 2 cost centers:

Total: 232,558

60% = 139534.8

40% = 93023.2

These were then rounded to:
139.534 (-0.8)
93.024 (+0.8)

The reason the rounding here is not in the direction one would expect is that the calculations performed when getting the 60% and the 40% of each posting amount during the distribution run causes rounding to occur.

So for example the first 4 postings we see in the distribution run under the Postings tab are from the below calculation.

There was a total amount of 156253 TWD to be distributed, which gives the below:

60% = 93751.8
40% = 62501.2

These numbers were then rounded to 93752 and 62501 as can be seen on the UI under postings, leaving a difference of +0.2 on the cost center which is receiving 60% of the costs, and -0.2 on the other.

The system goes through all of the distributions individually and then rounds the totals to the nearest whole number to post them to the cost centers, leaving in the end a difference of + and - 0.8 on each cost center, which is the difference you are seeing on the rounding of the total.

The reason the total is rounded in this way is that the rounding to the nearest whole number is performed on the amounts being posted to the cost centers, and not the total.

The total then has to be rounded in the way it is or else it would cause an inconsistency.

Resolution

System behavior is correct.
