3020358 - IES Connection Test throws 500 Internal Server Error on returning call from IES to SAP

Symptom

If you are doing a connection test for IC4S / IES (Intelligent Capture for SAP Solutions), the test-page shows a 444 / timeout error. However on IES side, the returning call is answered by SAP with an 500 Internal Server Error.

When you check further in the SAP Application Log (SM21), you find entries like

D0 Transaction Canceled ITS_P 001 ( )
W0 ITS, User session could not be created

at the time when you did the connection-test.
