Symptom
- Cannot use the filters "previous date" and the "select date members" in one chart at once.
- Customer expects, that story/chart filters should work like in the Dashboard report:
- when opening the report, the "previous date" data should be loaded into the chart,
- however, users should be able to filter on data with different date, too.
- e.g. you want the chart to show the data from previous date (e.g. if today is Feb 5, then previous date is Feb 4), and you would like to have that date shown in the chart. The date "Feb 5" should be changed dynamically by the story viewer easily, so if the viewer wants to look at the data on Jan 20, then there is a way to set the previous date to "Jan 20".
Environment
- SAP Analytics Cloud (Enterprise) 2020.21.14
Reproducing the Issue
Scenario 1
- Log on to SAC tenant.
- Create a story with a chart e.g. Comparison - Bar/Column on a sample model [BestRunCorp_Retail].
- Select Measures e.g. [Sales Revenue] and Dimensions e.g. [City].
- Add a Story filter e.g. in the story main panel Tools - Add Story Filter/Prompt - Add Time Filters e.g. "Previous" - "Day" => data will be loaded for previous date.
- Try to add a story filter e.g. Tools - Add Story Filter/Prompt - Dimensions - [Date] dimension is grayed out.
Scenario2
- Log on to SAC tenant.
- Create a story with a chart e.g. Comparison - Bar/Column on a sample model [BestRunCorp_Retail].
- Select Measures e.g. [Sales Revenue] and Dimensions e.g. [City].
- Create Chart filter "Previous Date" e.g. [Date (Range)]:
- Range Type [Offset], Granularity [Day], Look Back [0], Look Ahead [0]
- Offset Direction [Look Back], Offset Granularity [Day], Offset Amount [1]
- Set the Settings for User: "Allow viewers to modify selections", "Unrestricted Drilling", "Single Selection".
- Create Chart filter for free date selection e.g. [Date (Member)]:
- Select members e.g. years [2019, 2020, 2021]
- Set the Settings for User: "Allow viewers to modify selections".
- Notice, that only one date filter will be available, the "Previous Date" filter will disappear.
- If you add a Story filter instead of the chart filter e.g. in the story main panel Tools - Add Story Filter/Prompt - Dimensions - [Date] - Filter by Member:
- Select members e.g. years [2019, 2020, 2021]
- Set the Settings for User: "Allow viewers to modify selections".
- Only data for "Previous Date" filter will be loaded.
Cause
- You can only have 1 current date input control defined for the entire story. However you can link multiple range filters to it.
- You can only create 1 filter on a specific dimension for each chart or table. For example, you cannot create multiple filters (e.g. one range filter and another member selection filter) on the same "shipping date" dimension. This is the same for story filters as well.
- You can find more information about Current Date input control .
Resolution
- Create the previous date filter as usual in the chart, either by using the "Previous" -> Day shortcut or build your own manually.
- Edit the previous day filter. In the filter dialog, you should be able to see the a drop down box under the header "Current Date". By default, the drop down box shows the entry "System Date / Period".
- Click this drop down box. You should see the option "Create Current Date Input Control...". Click it and another pop up should be shown.
- In this new current date input control pop up you can specify the name of the input control and the granularity (e.g. you can change it to day).
- Click OK on both dialogs and you should be back to the story page.
- Effectively you have set up your previous date filter to be driven by the current date input control.
- You should be able to see the current date input control show up in the story filter bar.
- Now depending on what date you select in the current date input control the previous date filter should be automatically updated to reflect that.
