3043196 - Error when checking local connectivity: TrustAnchor with subject <CA details> is not a CA certificate

Symptom

Communication between SCC and back-end system ABAP thru HTTPS fails with following error from SCC trace (ljs_trace.log):

javax.net.ssl.SSLHandshakeException: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: PKIX path validation failed: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: TrustAnchor with subject <CA details> is not a CA certificate
Caused by: sun.security.validator.ValidatorException: TrustAnchor with subject <CA details> is not a CA certificate at sun.security.validator.PKIXValidator.verifyTrustAnchor(PKIXValidator.java:393)
