Symptom

  • The Error "VAT Registration No. (KNA1-STCEG) is a required entry field" is raised when editing a Business Partner in SAP S/4HANA Cloud
  • The Error "VAT Registration No. (LFA1-STCEG) is a required entry field" is raised when editing a Business Partner in SAP S/4HANA Cloud

Reproducing the Issue

Example from the Maintain Business Partner Master Data App (the issue can happen in other creation/editing scenarios for Business Parters)

  1. Open a Business Partner in the Customer or Supplier role in the Maintain Business Partner Master Data App
  2. Edit the BP
  3. The system raises the error "VAT Registration No. (KNA1-STCEG) is a required entry field"

Cause

The VAT number has been set as a required field in the customising for the Customer or Supplier account group being edited and no VAT number has been entered or a VAT number has been entered for a BP which is not VAT relevant i.e. a BP which is not from the EU

Resolution

If the Business Partner being edited is from the EU then add a value for the VAT number under the Identification type.

N.B. It is not recommended to set the VAT field as a required field as not all Business Partners will be from the EU and having this setting will make it impossible to edit non-EU Business Partners.

  1. Open the SSCUI 103050 - Define Account Groups with Screen Layout (Customers) for customer account groups or the SSCUI 103127 - Define Account Groups with Screen Layout (Vendors) for supplier account groups.
  2. Select the Account Group of the BP for which the error is being raised.
  3. Follow the path of "General data -> Control -> VAT registration number"
  4. Pick another setting other than Req. Entry e.g. Optional
