SAP automatically backs up customers’ business, process and configuration data on an ongoing basis. Backup characteristics depend on Service Level Agreements.

Frequency:

  • Two full backups are done every day. The remaining differential backups are distributed throughout the week.

  • Log files are incrementally backed up every two hours. This saves all changes in the database since the last full backup.

Location:

  • Separate data centers store the primary and secondary backups.

Advantage:

  • Recovery up to the last second is supported (log file replay) within the database recovery process.

  • In the event of an unexpected disaster, where one location is destroyed, the maximum lost time for a customer is two hours.

Retention Times:

  • Backups are retained for up to 14 days in the geographically separated backup data center.

Recovery:

  • In case of system malfunction, SAP automatically recovers backed up data with customer notification and corresponding approval. Recovery characteristics depend on Service Level Agreements.
