3059918 - ASE does not start due to message "The 'number of devices' specified in your config file is not high enough" - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • ASE startup terminates with messages including:

Virtual device X started using asynchronous (with DIRECTIO) i/o
The 'number of devices' specified in your config file is not high enough. It must not be less than the actual number of devices, which is '16'.
ueshutdown: exiting

  • The same issue can also result in error 840 being reported on one or more devices:

Error: 840, Severity: 17, State: 2
Device 'sysprocsdev' (with physical name 'C:\sybase\data\sysprocs.dat', and virtual device number 1) has not been correctly activated at startup time.
