3086709 - Dump database hangs with "The internal timer is not progressing" in ASE log - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • Dump database command hangs;
  • The ASE errorlog reports the following:

Warning: The internal timer is not progressing. If this message is generated multiple times, report to SAP Technical Support and restart the server (alarminterval=-XXX).

  • No error reported in the Backup Server log, the only message written to the Backup Server log at the time of the dump is:

<timestamp>: Backup Server: 4.172.1.4: The value of 'allocated pages threshold' has been set to 40%.

  • No error reported in the OS log;
  • pstack of hanging dataserver shows calls to des_checkpoint_flush_sysstats and x64_lock()
  • ASE cannot be stopped in a controlled manor:
    • 'shutdown' command is unsuccessful;
    • 'shutdown with nowait' is unsuccessful;
    • 'kill -15' to stop the dataserver process on OS is unsuccessful;
    • Only 'kill -9' on dataserver process on OS is successful.
  • After killing the process, the shared memory is not released and a reboot of  the entire system is required in order to free up the memory so that ASE can be started again.
