Symptom

  • XML query causing signal 11 and stack trace
  • There are a number of patterns, most commonly with an XML function in the stack
  • The ASE errorlog contains an infected with 11 error

    Current process (0xf3007a) infected with signal 11 (SIGSEGV)

  • Followed by a stack trace that includes one or more functions, mostly referencing XML code:

    PtlXmlQuery::XmlXQueryNext
    xml_session_cleanup
    xml_free_fragment
    XmlSession::getMemoryManager
    bi_xml_xquery_close
    LeXmlTableOp::_LeOpClose

    ubffreef
    kbfalloc
    ubpfcleanup
    kbremove

  • It may be preceded by error 712 indicating ASE ran out of heap memory:

    Error: 712, Severity: 17, State: 3
    There is insufficient heap memory to allocate 24 bytes. Please increase configuration parameter 'heap memory per user' or try again when there is less activity on the system.
