3093771 - 500 Internal Server Error if Internet Explorer is disabled/inactive

Symptom

When using SAP GUI for Windows and calling a web transaction (e.g. NWBC, SM_Workcenter, etc..) you may receive the error "500 Internal Server Error".

This happens if you disabled (set inactive) Internet Explorer and has only been observed if SSO (single-sign on) is used.
