3095201 - On Premise access fails with error message "Invalid server certificate"

Symptom

Making a call from an application to a backend turns back with the error message: "Invalid server certificate".

In the LJS trace the following log appears:

at io.netty.channel.AbstractChannelHandlerContext.invokeExceptionCaught(AbstractChannelHandlerContext.java:302)

...

Caused by: java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Certificate contains unsupported DNS name: 
<backend server DNS name e.g.: "xyz.mycompany.com">
 at com.sap.core.connectivity.spi.util.CertificateUtils.assertDNSName(CertificateUtils.java:241)
 at com.sap.core.connectivity.spi.util.CertificateUtils.extractSubjectAlternativeDNSNames(CertificateUtils.java:206)
