3101215 - Msg 4002 (Login Failed) after password change - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • After changing the password of a login (using alter login command or sp_password command), unable to login using the new password :

           isql -U<loginname> -S<servername> -P<new_password>

          Msg 4002, Level 14, State 1:
          Server 'servername>:
          Login Failed.
          CT-LIBRARY error: 
                    ct_connect(): protocol specific layer: external error: The attempt to connect to the server failed.

  • Same issue with login on a different client as well as from the server itself 
  • Use of double quotes around the new password does not help
  • A server restart also does not help
    We tried alter login loginname with password <caller_password> modify password <new_login_password> but didn't help
