3109802 - SAP HANA System Startup fails with error 'Unable to lockf() the lock file'

Symptom

When starting the SAP HANA System, errors similar to the following are shown in the command line:

  • FAIL: process hdbdaemon HDB Daemon not running
  • FAIL: process hdbindexserver HDB Indexserver not running
  • FAIL: process hdbcompileserver HDB Compileserver not running

In addition the following error appears in the Linux Syslog (/var/log/messages):

  • 2020-09-28T09:15:05.867889-04:00 wwww4p01 SAPXXX_10[4589]: Unable to lockf() the lock file /tmp/.sapstartsrv10_sapstartsrv.log, some other process already has a lock. (Error 11 Resource temporarily unavailable) [/bas/753_REL/src/proj/ntserv/ntservsserver.cpp 3333]
  • 2020-09-28T09:15:05.868234-04:00 wwww4p01 SAPXXX_10[4589]: Unable to open trace file sapstartsrv.log. (Error 11 Resource temporarily unavailable) [/bas/753_REL/src/proj/ntserv/ntservsserver.cpp 4559]
