Symptom
When saving a change in Manage Business Configuration or importing the Succession Data Model an error is referenced configuration issues with Background Element Configuration.
When making changes via Business Configuration or importing the Data Model, the validation error will appear as one of the following:
- “The Data Field ID “XXX” cannot be same as the Background Element ID “YYY”. Change the Data Field ID to save your configuration.”
For example: “The Data Field ID “certification” cannot be same as the Background Element ID “certification”. Change the Data Field ID to save your configuration.”

Cause
This error is caused by a validation introduced over the 2H 2021release:
While managing your Data Model configuration from the UI or Data Model import, validations are now in place to check if your Background Data Field ID is the same as the Background Element ID.
These validations help you to:
- Identify configuration issues at an early stage to prevent further issues while using Background Elements.
- Address the downstream impacts of this configuration issue.
When this error is received, the save action will be prevented in both Business Configuration UI and on import of the Data Model, until the configuration issue is corrected.
Resolution
To resolve the issue and to be able to save changes or successfully import the configuration issue must be resolved.
This is done by adjusting the Data Field ID, this can be done from Manage Business Configuration or the Succession Data Model.
How to resolve the issue in Business Configuration UI, if only one error occurs:
- In Manage Business Configuration, navigate to the relevant Background Element section
- Select the field from the error
- Change the “ID” to a new value, different from the Background Element ID and unique to all other fields
- Save changes
If more than one error occurs for more than one Background Element:

How to resolve the issue in Succession Data Model Imports:
- Download and save a backup of the Succession Data Model
- In the Succession Data Model, navigate to the relevant Background Element
- Find the referenced field from the error in the corresponding background element section
- Change the “ID” to a new value, different from the Background Element ID and unique to all other fields
- Saves a new version of the Succession Data Model (different to the backup version)
- Import the updated Succession Data Model
- As a customer, you don’t have access to Provisioning. To complete tasks in Provisioning, contact your implementation partner. If you’re no longer working with an implementation partner, contact SAP Cloud Support.
Please note:
- No data loss will occur by changing the Data Field ID. All existing Data will be maintained in the instance under the same field after the Data Field ID is updated.
- If this field is used in integrations, no impact will occur by changing the Data Field ID the Data Dictionary will be updated to reflect the change to the existing field.
- This validation will only occur for enabled Background Elements. If the Element is not enabled, the validation will not occur until the element is enabled.
