3112457 - Alpha Conversion in Cloud Data Sources

Symptom

You are using the alpha conversion in a cloud data source to ensure that data in this field is stored in a particular format, for example with leading zeros. However you notice that the data is not stored with leading zeros. This could be relevant when joining this data source with another one on that field.

Environment

  • SAP Business ByDesign
  • SAP Cloud for Customer

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Go to the work center Business Analytics and the view Design Data Sources.
  2. Search for your cloud data source and click Edit.
  3. For the relevant field (let us say field ABC in this case), maintain the length, e.g. 20 characters.
  4. For the same field, tick the option Alpha Conversion.
  5. Save.

With this option, you would expect that if you upload a value in ABC which is shorter than 20 characters, the system will extend the value with leading zeros, until it has 20 characters.

However, when you join this data source with another one, on a field which also has 20 characters, the field values don't match and the join does not work.

Cause

The Alpha Conversion is used to display the values correctly on the UI.

Resolution

If you would like to ensure the correct number of characters in a cloud data source field, you would need to upload the values with the corresponding number of characters.

In our example, instead of uploading a value like 123 into the field ABC, you would need to ensure that the data is uploaded like this: 00000000000000000123.
