3137968 - Image shows horizontally in Crystal Reports

Symptom

  • Image display horizontally.
  • Picture orientation incorrect.
  • Puicture shows vertically in an image processing application, but horizontally in Crystal Reports. 

Environment

  • SAP Crystal Reports 2013
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2016
  • SAP Crystal Reports 2020 

Reproducing the Issue

  1. In an image processing application, open a picture, and see it is showing vertically.
  2. In Crystal Reports, create a new report, or open an existing report.
  3. Under the menu "Insert", select "Picture"
  4. Select the image, and insert it on the report.
  5. The image shows horizontally, instead of vertically. 

Cause

  • The picture was taken horizontally using a camera, or a smart phone.
      
  • The image editing software shows the picture vertically because it auto-rotate the image based on the orientation information stored in the file. Note: Not all image processing application have the auto-rotate features.
           
  • In Crystal Reports, the picture will show as it is stored in the file, and this is why it showing horizontally. 

Resolution

  • In an image editing software, open the picture, and save it vertically.  
      
    1. In an image processing editing software, open the picture.
    2. Save the picture vertically.
    3. In Crystal Reports, open the report.
    4. Under the menu "Insert", select "Picture"
    5. Select the updated picture, and insert it on the report.
    6. The picture now shows vertically.
