3139873 - Tree Map chart does not display descriptions longer than 40 characters in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC)

The following behavior occurs in SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC):

• Tree Map chart does not display descriptions longer than 40 characters.
• SAC does not use medium texts in Tree Map chart either.
• Objects do not use query setting to use medium texts instead of long texts.
  
  
  

1. Create a story that contains Tree Map chart based on BW live connection.
2. Observe that Tree Map chart does not display descriptions longer than 40 characters.
3. Change the texts to medium in BW query designer settings for affected dimension.
4. Observe that SAP Analytics Cloud does not use medium texts in Tree Map chart.
5. No objects uses the query setting to use medium texts instead of long texts.
   Observe that other chart type is working fine with long texts, the issue is only for Tree Map chart.

• This is behavior by design.
• By default the Tree Map will attempt as a best effort to render a dimension label (if it is enabled under the ... > Show/Hide menu in Edit mode) by wrapping it in the data point that it is available. If it does not fit, it will hide to avoid clutter, with the expectation that user can hover on the data-point to see the Tooltip and dimension label.

Options to proceed:

1) Turn off the Dimension Labels: this way the Tree Map will prioritize the data values.

2) Truncate the dimension with the long member descriptions: You could use a calculated dimension with the LEFT() method to shorten every returned value to a maximum that is most likely to fit. Assuming that you did not want to modify or cleanse the underlying data to also truncate or reduce it's length.
