Symptom

  • A select query with MAX() aggregate function on an allpages locked table may be slow when a lot of pages are read from disk on AIX platforms.
  • The following information can be seen in the showplan messages. 

            |SCALAR AGGREGATE Operator (VA = 1)
            |  Evaluate Ungrouped MAXIMUM AGGREGATE.
            |  Scanning only up to the first qualifying row.
            |
            |   |SCAN Operator (VA = 0)
            |   |  FROM TABLE
            |   |  <table name>
            |   |  Using Clustered Index.
            |   |  Index : <index name>
            |   |  Backward scan.
            |   |  Positioning at end of table.
