The Creating reports user guide advises the following.

If you require a special kind of report that is not provided by the tool, you can ask one of your workspace administrators to create a custom template.

For a special kind of report, is this referring to the Process documentation and templates which are populated as word or pdf versions, and not actual Excel Reports?

Yes, "special kind of reports" is referring to Process Documentation.

Standard reports are those that are already present in the Explorer > Reports menu, and are suffixed with "(XLS)", to indicate they are Excel Reports.
