3160886 - How can I edit process documentation template

I am currently using the academic edition of the Signavio modeler. I wanted to create a custom documentation template, but I was unable to edit the base template that was created when I selected "Create New Documentation Template".

Does the academic version of the platform support creating and editing custom templates?

The academic version does not support custom templates. You can adjust the standard template, but also not all parts of it. You can add e.g. the diagram to documentation as an image, linked dictionary entries, change the chapter names, add images or tables as a static element, but you can't change the layout itself.
