3164642 - [Planning Area] After users enter values in a table widget on a public version, the values are accepted but the cells become locked

Symptom

Issue occurs for models with Optimize Recommended Planning Area turned on: Introduction to the Planning Area Optimization for SAP Analytics Cloud

After users enter values in a table widget on a public version, the values are accepted but the cells become locked.  Only after publishing or reverting this change explicitly the cells become unlocked and users are allowed to make further changes.

Environment

SAP Analytics Cloud, all versions

Reproducing the Issue

  1. Turn on the "Optimize Recommended Planning Area" in the model properties.
  2. Create a Story or Analytic Designer application and add a table for input use.
  3. When entering data (with or without mass data entry turned on) the initial values are accepted but after entering data all the cells become locked.
  4. Cells remain locked until data is published.

Cause

The Planning Area cannot be calculated due to missing dimension information in axes or filters.

This behavior is currently as designed. You can find more info in the Planning Area documentation: Optimize Planning Models Using the Planning Area - SAP Help Portal

Resolution

All dimensions that are in the filter of the planning area need to be on one of the axes or filtered to a (positive) list of members (exclude and range filters are not sufficient).

If this condition is not met, the cells will not allow input because the query processing misses information to determine whether the cell is inside the planning area.

Note:

The rules that determine whether a cell is inside the planning area can lead to situations in which cells no longer allow input, even though they would allow input without the planning area.

For example, a cell of a public version that seems to allow data entries might not allow input once the version is put into edit mode. This is because the planning area is only applied when the edit mode is started.
