3191752 - 'License verification failed' when using a license server, followed by message that license is checked out soon after - SAP ASE

Symptom

  • In a setup with a license server
  • When starting ASE or when a licence heartbeat is reported in ASE log
  • First there are messages including that 'License verification failed' and that license is graced
    • This is usually for an optional license: ASE_ENCRYPTION, ASE_PARTITION etc
  • This is then immediately followed by a message that the license was checked successfully.

  • An example of ASE log entries for optional license ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER

    00:0003:00000:00000:2025/03/31 05:03:49.82   SySAM: License verification failed for checked out ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER. License will be graced until Thu 30 Jun 2025 05:03:49 AM EDT.
    -- Further log messages with removed prefix spid / date strings for clarity
    Error: 131275, Severity: 17, State: 1
    WARNING: ASE functionality that requires the ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER license will be disabled on Thu 30 Jun 2025 05:03:49 AM EDT, unless a suitable
    ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER license is obtained before that date.
    Failed to obtain license(s) for ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER feature from License Server 27001@licence_server_hostname.
    No such feature exists. Verify that a license containing the feature name ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER is available or generate and deploy the license from the SAP Support Portal.

    SySAM: License search path:   /sybase/SYSAM-2_0/licenses/SERVED_LICENSE.lic
    FlexNet Licensing error:-5,147

    -- then with same timestamp, the license is checked out successfully
    00:0003:00000:00000:2025/03/31 05:03:49.82 SySAM: Checked out license for 48 ASE_WORKLOADANALYZER (2025.12310/permanent/XXXX XXX XXXX XXXX).
  • Next heartbeat or on re-start, the same thing happens with the reported grace time moving accordingly
