3193789 - Error "Cannot create registry key" in upgrade-phase SHDINST_OS

Symptom

  • During an upgrade using Software Update Manager (SUM) an error occurs in phase  SHDINST_OS  
  • The error message is similar to :
    Adding registry value 'SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\SAP<XXX>_<YY>' failed: Cannot create registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    'SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\SAP<XXX>_<YY>': The operation completed successfully.
    Last error code set is: Cannot open registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
    'SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\EventLog\Application\SAP<XXX>_<YY>': The system could not find the environment option that was entered.
